East Sac Frameworks
The East Sac Local - JUNE 2025
Matthew Geist is the proud owner of East Sac Frameworks, a cozy and creative picture framing shop nestled in the heart of East Sacramento. Living just a block away from his shop, Matthew is surrounded by the community he serves. He shares his life with his wife Kate, their energetic daughter Faye, and is eagerly anticipating the arrival of a baby boy this June. Matthew’s journey as an artist began long before his framing business took off. With a degree in printmaking from the Savannah College of Art and Design, he has been immersed in the world of art his entire life.
The inspiration to start East Sac Frameworks came after Matthew’s move to Sacramento. After visiting several local shops and exploring a variety of career paths, he wanted the freedom to create his own art while making a living. “I don’t feel like I have a job,” Matthew says. “I listen to music all day, do arts and crafts, and make people super happy. It’s really fun!” His vision was to combine his passion for art with a profession that would allow him to help others preserve their own treasured pieces.
East Sac Frameworks is more than just a framing shop—it’s a place where creativity and craftsmanship come together. Matthew works in-house, offering a range of beautiful moldings, from high-end to more affordable options, ensuring there’s something for everyone. The materials he uses are all acid-free, and he practices proper conservation techniques as if each piece were his own. “Everything I do is done by me and by hand,” he explains, emphasizing the personal touch that sets his shop apart from others.
Before becoming a business owner, Matthew’s journey took him through several unexpected turns. He served four years in the United States Air Force as an aircraft maintainer. Afterward, he used his G.I. Bill to attend art school, where he earned his BFA in printmaking. Matthew took on various roles, including bartender, cellarman at Anchor Brewery (where he met his wife), and even a stint at Facebook. The move to New York City was a pivotal moment when Matthew reconnected with the art world, eventually finding his way to Brooklyn Frameworks. Under the mentorship of legendary framer Andrew Walker, Matthew honed his framing skills, learning the nuances of art preservation and craftsmanship that he now brings to his own business.
What truly distinguishes East Sac Frameworks is Matthew’s artistic background. His clients appreciate the attention to detail and care he puts into each project, treating every item as though it were a piece of art. “I think my clients like that I have a background in the arts, that I treat everything as if it were my own,” he says. The shop has become a local favorite, especially after Matthew moved to a more accessible location in the vibrant neighborhood of East Sacramento. His new storefront has created a welcoming atmosphere, where customers can expect a personalized experience and expert framing.
Matthew is proud of the shop’s success, but he’s especially excited about the impact it has had on the community. “The neighborhood has really come out to show support,” he shares. His clients value the quality and quiet elegance of his work, as one client once remarked about his “quiet framing.” Matthew strives to elevate the artwork without distracting from it, ensuring that every piece is presented in a way that honors its essence.
Looking ahead, Matthew hopes to expand East Sac Frameworks further. He plans to bring on an associate to help with sales, allowing him to extend his shop’s hours and reach more customers. In the future, he also envisions offering classes for artists to learn how to present and frame their own work.
East Sac Frameworks is more than just a framing shop; it’s a space where art is cherished, and every piece is handled with care and expertise.
