Sactown Vet

by Alexandra Thornton, DVM, cVMA, CCRP, Fear Free Elite

Sactown Vet opened in July 2023 and has received such an intensely warm welcome from the community that we rapidly outgrew our space! As a result, last fall we completed a much-needed expansion that nearly doubled our size.

The expansion is a physical representation of what we offer at Sactown Vet: a Fear Free, client-centered approach. With now 10 exam rooms, when you and your pet arrive at our office, you are immediately invited into an exam room. No waiting in a stressful lobby with loud noises and stressed pets. We even have a dog side and a cat side to the hospital, so the chances that your cat is going to hear a barking dog is almost non-existent. Nothing has changed with our exam rooms, though: they still have those white noise machines to reduce stressful sounds for your pet, they’re still full of treats (including unlimited pup cups!), and you’re still able to get all the coffee, tea and snacks you need.

The treatment area expanded, too. We have more room in our dog and cat wards, which allows us to prepare pets for surgeries and procedures in a quiet, calm space without distractions. We still keep the lights dimmed in the wards and have white noise machines there, too, because your pet deserves to rest in a calm and quiet place. And of course we still have warming enclosures, so your pet feels even more like they’re in a cozy home! Finally, the increased space in the general treatment area allows owners to more comfortably be with their pet during their visit.

Perhaps the thing I’m most proud of? We have a client lounge next to our treatment area. This is a place where you SPOTLIGHTcan relax with unlimited human treats while your pet is being taken care of. We’ve had clients who hang out there all day working while their pet is hospitalized. Others have used it while their pet is getting a long dental procedure. While others have used it for shorter procedures, like waiting for radiographs to be taken. The room has floor-to-ceiling windows looking into the treatment rooms so you can see everything that is happening with your pet.

The expansion highlights everything I hoped Sactown Vet would be: A transparent hospital where you are not separated from your pet unless you choose to be. A Fear Free hospital where reducing pets’ stress, fear, and anxiety is the cornerstone of their health. A hospital where your pet’s medical plan is developed with your pet and you in mind—there is no one-size-fits-all approach to your pet’s care because every pet and their family is unique and requires tailored care to reflect that.

If you haven’t checked us out yet, now is the time to come and see the Sactown Vet difference. Heck, bring your dog in for a happy visit: a free visit when you and your pet get to tour the hospital while we feed your pet lots and lots of treats. You get to see the place, and your pet walks out of there thinking the vet isn’t so bad after all.
