Sactown Vet

AUGUST 2026

After years of working at animal hospitals and learning the ropes of veterinary care, Dr. Alexandra Thornton decided to develop an animal hospital focusing

on compassionate and transparent animal care services. Now, two years after

Sactown Vet first opened, she and her team are expanding the business while continuing to offer top-notch services to the pets and pet parents that come through their doors looking for care.

Sactown Vet is a small animal hospital for cats and dogs. Outside of the regular vaccinations, spay/neuters, and general

checkups, the hospital offers other nonpharmaceutical options to improve pets’ quality of life, including laser therapy,

physical rehabilitation, and acupuncture.

Sactown Vet also makes its mark as a facility where animals’ emotional well-being is put first.

“We are a fear-free hospital, so

we prioritize dogs’ and cats’ emotional welfare in the hospital when managing their health—if they are very stressed by

something, we don’t hold them down and force procedures on them. It’s gentle, calm, and compassionate care,” Dr. Thornton

says. They’re also a completely open hospital where clients are allowed and even encouraged to be present for all aspects of

their animals’ appointments (except X-rays, for legal reasons).

Prior to opening Sactown Vet, Dr.

Thornton worked at two other animal hospitals. Her time at those facilities helped inspire her to become an entrepreneur.

“I get so much fulfillment out of helping

keep animals healthy because I know those animals are a part of a family that loves them so much,” she says. “I want to keep

that pet and that family happy and whole.”

Dr. Thornton says that the network of veterinary practices in Sacramento has been extremely helpful and supportive, offering

advice and feedback rather than viewing Sactown Vet as competition. “Whether it was teaching me how to be a compassionate

vet or helping me see what makes a good boss and business owner, everyone in this industry has had a hand in Sactown Vet,”

she explains. She adds that each day she reminds herself how lucky she is that her team works for her and her clients trust her

to care for their animals.

July 2025 marks two years since Sactown Vet opened for business and they’re celebrating this milestone while also reveling in the near-completion

of their hospital expansion, which will double the size of their hospital by adding six additional exam rooms. Dr. Thornton

says that despite the challenges associated with opening a new business, the hospital has thrived and hopefully will continue

to grow. “Sactown Vet has been blessed with tremendous success,” she shares.

“We would not be here if it was not for

such a supportive and loyal community.

I am so grateful that we have gained so much in such a short amount of time.”

Moving forward, Dr. Thorton and the team at Sactown Vet are excited to continue establishing themselves in downtown

Sacramento as a place where pet owners and their furry companions can come for quality care.
