Easton Painting

by Alexandra Hruz

For Don Easton, owner of Easton Painting, the last three decades have been powered by passion, curiosity, and determination. During that time, he’s created a foundation based on patience, empathy, and intuition that’s resulted not only in top-notch craftsmanship but also in strong relationships and an invaluable connection to the community.

Easton Painting was established in 1995. A few years later, in 2001, Mark Ruggiero came on board and has been a priceless addition to the business. Don describes his team as historic restoration craftsmen who are a unique blend of cerebral, physical, artistic, and communicative. “We love the challenge, and we practice the art of craftsmanship,” Don says. “Learn, connect, practice, read, talk, share, fail, succeed, and repeat.” Thanks to the team’s willingness to go above and beyond, they’ve been honored with many national awards. Decades’ long relationships with clients who became friends are unexpected but incredibly valuable rewards.

The longevity of Easton Painting can be attributed to a number of factors. Don emphasizes his team’s dedication to painting and restoration knowledge, skill, and attention to detail. He adds that they bring a passion for what they do to each job and ensure that their clients feel confident by building trust and connection. This process begins with giving estimates, a step that Don explains is crucial in the process. “When I go on an estimate, it's the same as a first date. Do we connect? Is there trust and openness? Do we want to see each other again?” he explains. “We will work together, make decisions together, so the feeling must be mutual.” Another important aspect of their business is the strong connections they’ve fostered with talented craftspeople in the nation and around the globe, giving them the ability to contact skilled friends and vendors worldwide for more information to help with their projects. “This has enhanced our business in more ways than I ever imagined,” Don says.

With more than 30 years in the industry, Don and his team at Easton Painting feel confident in the choices they’ve made that have led them on their business journey. Looking back at what he’s accomplished as an entrepreneur, Don shares a few words of wisdom for others hoping to get involved in the small business world. “Follow your passion, have fun, be kind and giving, and do the right thing,” Don says. The most important aspect of Don’s life now is the foster youth project he works with regularly. For over 15 years, it has provided large duffle bags filled with 65-70 items for the classroom, laundry, kitchen, and bathroom to those graduating and aging out of the foster care system in Yolo County. He adds that as the president-elect of the Woodland Sunrise Rotary Club, he’ll share this project with organizations in other counties and states, and hopefully, internationally.
