There is something special about an old home. It’s architecture, charming details and materials all speak to its heritage and the people who have lived there before. When you step into this traditional cottage in Sacramento, you can sense the care it has received over the years. With that comes a responsibility to hold onto its form and to enhance it, rather than pave it over with something new. When our clients reached out, they had recently purchased the house and wanted help making it their home, beginning with the formal living room. This space had the type of character designers dream of: arched thresholds, leaded-glass windows, beautiful moldings, French doors and framed original wood floors. Those details deserved respect. Our role was to lean into that heritage, adding warmth, comfort and the family’s personality. At Elizabeth C. Style Interiors, that thinking guides our design process. Here, we echoed the room’s symmetry with grasscloth demilune tables flanking the large front window. Brass feet, custom-framed artwork and picture lights give each arrangement a sense of importance. Custom drapery softens the windows, while brass hardware with ball finials feels at home with the traditional detailing. Older homes sometimes call for custom solutions, and knowing where to invest is part of our work. The room’s long proportions needed a rug sized specifically for the seating arrangement. We commissioned a hand-knotted rug in blue-green and taupe hues, drawing the green walls into the furnishings and bringing the space together. A tailored sofa with turned legs anchors the room, while matching swivel chairs invite guests to settle in and talk. Two custom ottomans in ticking fabric with piping add texture and flexible seating. The large ottoman combines stunning burl wood, caning and a durable marine-leather top, a practical piece with beautiful material detail. Above the fireplace, a carefully scaled mirror fits perfectly within the existing architectural frame. It’s a fitting finishing touch for a room designed to carry the home’s character forward, with a new layer of the family’s own story. What we love most is how naturally it all comes together. The room still feels like the house our clients fell in love with, now with places to gather, pieces to enjoy and room for their own history to unfold. Interior Design: Elizabeth C.
