Designing My Own Laundry Room and Bath

There’s something especially rewarding (and humbling) about designing your own home. As a designer, I’m constantly creating for others, interpreting their stories, and turning their spaces into reflections of who they are. But when it comes to your own house, every decision feels deeply personal. It’s a chance to breathe new life into familiar rooms and test your own design philosophy in real time.

This project centered on two adjoining spaces: our laundry room and bathroom. Since they sit side by side, I wanted them to share a sense of harmony without feeling repetitive. My goal was to create continuity that felt intentional and cohesive without being predictable.

The vision started from the ground up with a timeless checkered floor that became the anchor for both rooms. In the laundry room, full-height cabinetry with a whimsical scalloped detail makes the space efficient and elevated, with a built-in pull-out for laundry that has been a game-changer for our day-to-day lives. The centerpiece of the space is a deep copper sink sourced from Europe paired with traditional hot and cold taps - a detail that turns even chores into something beautiful. I often cut flowers here or fill vases from the cold tap, and the patina deepens with time, telling its own story.

Next door, the bathroom takes on a similar sophisticated but playful mood. The cabinetry stain is deep and refined and I designed the vanity to look like an heirloom piece of furniture. The marble countertop apron is a showstopper in its own right, and provides the perfect base for all of the other materials to shine. The walls and trim repeat the same color as the laundry cabinets, quietly linking the spaces. All of the hardware from faucets to knobs to shower faucets are unlacquered brass, which will beautifully age over time. Handmade zellige shower tiles give just the right amount of depth and texture, while marble penny-round tile in the shower pan adds understated luxury.

Though distinct, the two rooms are connected through materiality - brass, marble, zellige tile and rich colors. The spaces are also linked by the belief that even functional spaces deserve beauty and intention. Together, they embody what I love most about design: harmony without predictability, utility wrapped in style, and a home that feels as authentic as the people who live within it.
