Miyagi Bar & Sushi
DECEMBER 2025
Miyagi Bar & Sushi
Located in Lyon Village, Miyagi Bar and Sushi has been a beloved local destination for sushi and cocktails for nearly 25 years.
Owner Jimmy Khov has cultivated more than just a restaurant; he has created a neighborhood gathering place where loyal friends and families
come together to enjoy exceptional food and a welcoming atmosphere.
Jimmy’s story is deeply rooted in resilience. His parents were refugees of the Cambodian war, and he was conceived in
a Filipino refugee camp before being born in Watsonville where he grew up. Jimmy began his journey at Miyagi in 2002 as
a busser. By 2004, he became a partner, gaining valuable experience through both challenges and successes. In 2012, he took
full ownership of the restaurant, joined by his brother Kenny Khov, a classically trained chef from Le Cordon Bleu in San
Francisco. Though new to Japanese cuisine, Kenny brought over 15 years of culinary experience to Miyagi, transforming and
elevating the menu to what it is today, a dining experience that is second to none.
Running Miyagi has required dedication, but Jimmy credits much of the restaurant’s success to the people around
him. He speaks proudly of his loyal staff, calling them the heart of the business, and of his brother, whose creativity
and leadership in the kitchen have been invaluable. He also recognizes the strong support of the Sacramento community,
noting that Miyagi’s regular patrons have been a cornerstone of its longevity.
The neighborhood’s loyalty has been especially meaningful. Despite the arrival of other sushi restaurants nearby, Miyagi’s
14 customers have continued to return, even during uncertain times when competition seemed daunting. Instead of slowing down, business grew stronger, a testament to the restaurant’s consistency, authenticity, and connection to its community.
The name “Miyagi” traces back to the movie The Karate Kid. The restaurant’s original owners wanted a fun, recognizable Japanese name, and it stuck. The space itself has a rich history, having been Café Oaxaca in 1996, then Café Nikko, before becoming Miyagi in 2001. Long before its restaurant days, the building actually housed a high-end fabric store.
Outside the restaurant, Jimmy lives in Arden Park with his wife, Kelsey, and their children Kinder (16), Drake (13), and Taylor (11). A passionate foodie, he enjoys exploring new restaurants and cuisines with his family. He also loves hunting and golf.
Recently, Miyagi underwent a major remodel, refreshing its atmosphere and giving it new life while preserving its warm, familiar charm. With a long-term lease now secured, Jimmy and his team look forward to continuing to serve the Sacramento community for many years to come. Jimmy’s mission remains simple: to stay consistent, to keep people happy, and to continue being true to what makes Miyagi special.
